Like I’ve said before, I’m a sunscreen fiend. I don’t leave the house without wearing some sort of SPF. A good sunscreen is important, but really hard to find. They usually break me out (Avène), or are drying, or make my face a shiny oil slick. Knowing this, it’s difficult to want to use a product that protects your skin while also making you look absolutely ridiculous.

I was looking for one with a pretty matte texture, that didn’t clog pores, and that provided good UVB as well as UVA protection. I tried La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios AC SPF 30 Matte Extreme Fluid first. It was awful. The texture didn’t spread well, nor did it absorb well. It sat on the skin like glue, was drying, and made my skin look a hundred years old. It also left the skin with a visible white sheen, and pilled over moisturizer. Then my foundation would pill over the sunscreen. It was an awful mess. Then throughout the day my skin would shine, yet look dry up close. After about 10 days of daily use, my skin began to break out, and I had many clogged pores. Awful.

After such an ‘awful’ experience, I was nervous to try a new sunscreen and hoped that anything would fare better. I decided to give the Bioderma Photoderm AKN Mat SPF 30 a go. So far it’s the best. I’m on my third tube and it hasn’t broken me out (which is a big deal)! It spreads easily and absorbs nicely. It is white, and leaves a touch of a white sheen but it doesn’t pill. I actually think it makes for a great primer and works well under foundation. It isn’t matte, but it isn’t shiny either. I do blot throughout the day, but my skin glows instead of shining. Last summer, a random guy approached me on the street and wanted to get to know me. He revealed that he has never seen skin like mine! I knew that it was the sunscreen, but of course I didn’t tell him that.

I know how hellish it is to find a sunscreen that suits you, but sunscreen is imperative if you never want to look older than your age (I plan on looking 19 forever). Give this a go, and tell me what you think.

Takeaway message: Wear sunscreen!!!
